She was wet and shivering, so he rubbed her arms and embraced her, trying to warm her. He didn’t ask why she called him from the middle of nowhere; he just showed up. He wouldn’t have expected an answer even if he had asked. He could be glad that this time didn’t involve some pansy-assed ‘09er, but then that probably meant she was further afield and had gotten into more serious trouble.

He gave her his jacket, and she settled on the motorcycle behind him, her fists clinching his shirt tightly as the rain soaked them. He was more than aware when she switched positions, hooking her thumbs into his belt loops as insurance against the curves of the road.

When they got back to her apartment, he expected her to flee the rain and run inside, but instead that thing that hung between them was a little more pronounced than usual. And with her earnest expression, it was hard to hold back.

He wrapped his arms around her and probably caressed her a little too friendly, and she clutched him to her a little too hard, her slight form still shivering against him. Somehow, he’d always known she’d taste like strawberries. She looked up at him as if there could be more, but he just smiled and slowly pulled away despite the frustration that washed over her face.

As he watched her dash through the rain to her apartment, he told himself it wasn't that she couldn’t make a place for herself in his world. It was just that she was destined to go places he would never dream of.
